VELLAM: The Essential Drink (meaning : Water)

Vellam, a Malayalam film based on a true story, written and directed by Prajesh Sen is about a man named "Murali" played by actor Jayasurya, who cannot control his drinking habits due to which people accuses him with the things he has not done, his family and friends turn away from him. For a long time he doesn't realise what he has lost, not his family or friends alone but also his respect. He is not concious enough to understand how hurt his father is when he sees his son fallen on unknown places, drunk and unconcious.

There comes a point in his life, where he feels that he wants his respect, family and friends back, and so he sets out on a journey to cure himself. Will he succeed? There are alot of people who cannot control their drinking habits and a lot who has lost their family and friends due to drinking. Most of them don't have proper guidance or constant support in their lives due to which they cannot get a proper life of their own. A drunkard is a patient, who needs to be treated, who needs people who trust him and stay with him, then only there are chances that he/she can come out of this habit.
The character portrayal of Murali was done rightly by Jayasurya and all the supporting characters around him, created a realistic environment, which speaks about real problems in the life of a drunkard.
