What are the ingredients to enhance the overall appearance of your book? The appearance includes the cover of the book, the author name, the book genre and yes the book blurb! The cover design has a lot of influence, the most attractive ones catches the eyes of a lot of readers. The title and the cover should match most importantly. If it’s a princess story and you just give a blank black background will it look interesting? If you are a fresh author then nobody knows you, so a large audience buying your book by just seeing your name is not really possible. And in such a case a good cover and a beautiful title along with a good blurb can help you a lot.

Before going to the part of how to write a good book blurb, first lets see what does a book blurb mean! Most of you know it, but for those who don’t; A Book blurb is a briefing or a short description of what your book is all about. The main motive of having a book blurb is to catch the readers attention! We want people interested in our genre of books and as well as a wide range of potential readers who will be also our potential buyers. When we buy a book, first the cover colour catches our eyes, then we quickly scan the title and the name of the author. With the title itself we should be able to know what the book is about, and if it is interesting , we turn the book and read the description and of-course will check the price too! But if the description is interesting enough, then guess what? Yes, there is a potential buyer! No one will forget a book which has attracted them , it will leave them more curious about the book.Their interest, their curiosity to know more is our success as a writer. And to generate this interest/ curiosity, the book blurb helps a lot!

  1. Knowing your genre and how to present it is of significant importance. With each genre lies a style of presenting it. A good book blurb comes with a good way of presenting your description and which will only happen if you know how your genre needs to be presented.
  2. Know the pulse of your readers! Yes, you heard it right; a thorough research of the kind of genre most people read and what age group is interested in what kind of genre will help you a lot when you think about your target audience group. Every reader who are searching for a book to buy will definitely have an idea on what kind of genre they are looking for. Be what they search for!
  3. Know the Importance of the first sentence, the first line of your book blurb decides if it will be read further or not by a potential reader who is reading your description. No one will waste too much time trying to figure out what a book is, everyone needs something catchy to explore further! No one will try to know more about something if it is off or dull to read in the starting.
  4. Don’t write the summary of your book, it will be a mood killer! If the whole story is just summarized on the back of the cover there is no need to buy and read the whole book right? Don’t kill the mood. Leave people curious to know more.
  5. Keep it short and crisp. Say a book blurb can vary from 70 words or a 100 to up-to 250 words. Always remember short and interesting lines which leaves a person curious to know more is what makes them buy it.
  6. Don’t make it look like the “Usual type or the “Over the top” type. If it sounds so obvious, it won’t be interesting enough for someone to buy it.
  7. Write the book blurb in third person, that’s the standard way to put it.
  8. Involve your readers emotionally in your journey. As I said earlier know their pulse! There need to be an emotional factor that connects them with the book. Even when you go for out of the world fantasy stories don’t forget to include real emotional feelings like love or sorrow etc. which people can connect to. Even though harry potter is a fantasy fictional story, there is love and friendship which keeps the readers emotionally connected to the story. We always need something that we can relate to, it need not be completely about that but at least a fraction of the main elements; the feelings which we can relate from real life!
